Antique 19th century convertible desk with secrets, Charles Dickens model
Wonderful rare antique English convertible desk from the end of the 19th century in solid oak, similar to the one used by the writer Charles Dickens, still present in his home at 48 Doughty Street in London. The closed desk is of the kneehole type, it opens on the sides to conceal drawers and compartments. In fact, the two sides can be opened and rotate outwards easily thanks to the retractable wheels placed under the two columns. The top has a leather surface, and can be opened to reveal practical compartments. Under the top there is a compartment closed by two doors. Finally, on the back there is a secret card holder that opens thanks to the action of a button.
The desk is perfect to be placed in the center of the room, as it is finished on all sides, and is sturdy and healthy. It is in its natural state, in good condition, it has not been restored, it should be polished according to taste. Note the lack of two knobs under the top, as shown in the photo, not useful as that portion does not open.
