17th century Emilian painting depicting the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple
17th century Emilian painting depicting the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, oil on canvas 37 x 33 cm. The composition develops in an architectural environment, with columns and perspective lines that suggest the interior of a temple. At the center of the scene is the Baby Jesus, lying on an altar in the arms of a priest, probably the high priest Simeon. Simeon is represented with an elderly appearance, a long beard and a crescent on his head, a symbol that could recall wisdom and the connection with the Jewish cult. On the left, in the foreground, we find the Virgin Mary kneeling in an attitude of prayer and devotion, with her head bowed as a sign of humility. Behind her we can see Saint Joseph, wrapped in an orange cloak, observing the scene with composure.
